Learning Photography with Chris - Frequently Asked Questions

I've only got a such-and-such camera. Is that good enough ?

Your camera is your camera. You are the photographer. Being a good photographer is about getting the best out of the camera that you own regardless of its capabilities. The most important part of the camera is the 12 inches behind it. OK, some cameras are better at some things than others and sometimes the less versatile cameras have to be bullied into doing some things that are easier to achieve with more versatile cameras but please don't feel that the camera that you own is an impediment to learning. You may go out and buy something different after we've worked together but it is far more important to learn how to get the best out of what you own than feel that only a really expensive camera will do.

But I'm a complete beginner

We all were once. Camera manuals are incredibly dry and don't really teach you a lot. There is a kernel of key skills that I concentrate on and you'd be amazed just how easy is it is to create very good images. My aim is to send you off in the right direction. On a 1:1 we can mix up any group of genres that you want.

Where do we meet for the courses ?

The day starts and finishes in Cressbrook, where I live. I like to work in the village Social Club, which is next door to my house.

When do they start and how long do they last ?

In the autumn, winter and spring the courses start at 9:00am and finish 5:00pm-ish depending on the weather and the light. During the longer days of late spring and summer I like to start and finish a later to take advantage of the late light. 11:00am - sunset is the usual.

I really would like to know all the arrangements beforehand

I issue joining instructions beforehand. I also write to you a few days in advance when I start to get the weather forecast for the day you will be here. It's nice to know in advance what the weather is likely to do to us.

I'm not particularly fit or mobile

The day is tailored to suit your needs not mine. Tell me what sort of experience you want and I will design a day that fits. I like the days to be both educational and enjoyable. I want to expand your horizons without harming your wellbeing !

I want to book a day with you, please

Marvellous. Thank you. A day with me costs £139. We'll put a date in the diary and settle up on the day.

I'm buying a day with you as a gift. Do you do gift vouchers ?

I do but I wont take any money off you for it. I prefer to settle up with either yourself or the giftee on or around the day we go out.

I want to do more than one day

No problem. The products that I offer through my web site are merely nice and easy to grasp. I am always happy to put together more complex experiences. The day rate also improves. Please drop me a line and talk to me about what it is you would like to do.

There is a group of us coming to the Peak District. Can we all come ?

Of course you can. The only caveat is that my car only takes 3 passengers comfortably so we might have to use one of your cars as well. Again, I will take that into consideration when we work out the price.

But I haven't got a tripod

You can borrow one of mine, I have a couple of spares

What happens if I've booked a course with you and I can't make it ?

Then we will reschedule. Things happen and I'm not going to penalise you if something comes up that you can't do anything about. I'm happy to hold it over until you get it sorted out.

What happens if you cancel ?

On the very rare occaisions that the weather makes a day's photography impossible then I like to try and be flexible. If you live reasonably locally and can do, for example, a Sunday instead of a Saturday then that flexibility works for me as well. If you are here on holiday and really can't do any other time than the date we agreed then we can try again another time. I'm not going to oblige you to go out and get soaking wet just because we agreed a date.

Do you only do weekends or can I come midweek ?

Midweek is perfectly acceptable. In fact it's preferable because the Peak District is quieter during the week !
