The format and structure of Photography Days with Chris Gilbert

Days start in Cressbrook, usually at the village social club, which is a really great space to work in. In winter we start earlier to help deal with the shorter days. In summer I like to start later and go all the way through until sunset - weather permitting as always.

The first part of the day is taken up with covering some technical and artistic fundamentals. I don't expect to turn you into an expert photographer in one day but I do try and lay some foundations upon which you can build and I'm always happy for our conversation to continue by email after we finish. Good photography comes through a combination of understanding how your camera works so that you can get the best out of it and understanding how art works so that can get the best out of the locations you visit and while the arty stuff is personal and subjective the techy stuff is absolute. Being comfy with your tools allows you develop as an artist.

Once we've got the basics covered we're off out into the countryside. The day plan will be determined by a combination of the weather and any subject preferences you have expressed. I have some locations that I like to use because they're excellent for explaining some fundamental principles but I also like to take an exploratory approach wherein you and I will work together to develop shots. It's highly unlikely that we'll see the landscape in the same way so while I will guide you by pointing things out and showing you how to compose for them I will also encourage you to see things your way and work with you to develop shots around what you see. There are some places where we will go where the views are classic Peak District standards and the tripod holes are already in the ground waiting for you but that's not the primary goal of the workshops. I'll do my best to get us to two, three or maybe four locations during the day, light and conditions permitting. We often find ourselves staying in a location for a few hours, such is the absorbing nature of the process. Time really does escape us sometimes but I'm never happier than finishing with the sunset and driving back in the dark.

We wont be doing any post-processing unless you specfically ask for it because I am not set up to provide those sorts of workshops

I don't offer insurance. It's something that I looked into in considerable detail when I started doing the workshops in 2008 and nobody would offer me any cover for the sort of activities we do. Those who did still insisted on me using a disclaimer with you, which made the whole point of paying for insurance completely irrelevant. So, I will ask you politely to read and sign a disclaimer before we go you out. It's nothing complicated or shocking and we don't take any risks in the field.

I hope this gives you a flavour for what to expect but if you do have any questions at all then please just email me.

Best regards

Chris
