In 2012 the first floor at Bakewell Visitor Centre was converted into a photography gallery dedicated to
the beauty and diversity of the Peak District National Park. The gallery is a partnership project between
the Peak District National Park Authority and the five local artists whose work it features and who
contribute significantly to its operation. The five artists involved are myself, Karen Frenkel, Ian Daisley,
Graham Dunn and Alex Hyde. We all live in and around the Peak Park and are all involved full time in
one capacity or another in Photography. Being involved with the Peak Gallery in Bakewell is wonderful
and we all appreciate the amazing opportunities it represents.
The purpose of the gallery is two-fold. First and foremost it is a business. All of the work shown is for
sale - framed prints, mounted prints, greetings cards, books and calendars - and the objectives are to
provide a trading opportunity for the artists involved and add to the Peak District National Park Authority's
overstretched budget and it is important as equal partners in the arrangement that we do our bit to
promote the gallery and attract the all-important buyers. Our second remit, however, is to provide an
additional and very exciting extra layer of interpretation to this wonderful area. By coming to the gallery
visitors will receive a gentle enlightenment into the wonderful sights and scenes that the area offers.
We hope that people will go out and look for these places, explore the Peak District and fall in love
with it just as we have. Hopefully that affection is translated through our work.
The gallery is open daily and is operated brilliantly by Don and his team at the Vistor Centre. We drop
in regularly to check how things are going and to talk to the staff about what is needed. You can find
the web site at www.peakgallery.co.uk but we
sincerely hope that you will take the time to come in and see us and add us to your list of places that
you regularly visit when you come to the Peak District.
